Subexotic is delighted to welcome New York based ‘synth maestro’ Salvatore Mercatante to the fold with his new album ‘DECAS’.

We are presented with a coherent, machine driven futurist soundscape. However, the gun-metal grey veneer is beginning to degenerate. Sleek bass lines and crisp snare shots are increasingly underscored with paranoid reflections, marking a more sombre narrative in Salvatore’s work:

“The final version of DECAS wasn't intended to be long for this world. It's deeply personal and in certain ways a tragic piece of self reflection. I had originally set out to write a spiritual successor to The Foundations of Eternal Sin (Castles In Space, 2020), which in so many words was a critique on the state of humanity. What came out was more intimate, involving my struggles with memory, anxiety, the passage of time, and feelings of inadequacy. DECAS also takes steps into a hypothetical future and what may come down the line. Dissimilar to previous albums, I decided to use samples to aid in storytelling as well as push the narrative (at some points perhaps a bit too clearly).”

Salvatore is already a well-established figure in the underground electronic music scene, having penned several superb albums across a variety of labels. Previous projects include:

I already loved Fran's music, but he's now moved into the first division! Each of his releases is a jewel in a different way. Here he uses a combination of beautiful textures and melodies with beats. Normally, beats aren't my thing, but here the effect is very inspiring, not dissimilar to the best Helios work. This is life-affirming music that brightens your day. Allister Thompson
